We live in a world characterized by a continuing trend
towards urbanization. As populations increase so does the demand for
mobility. Traffic congestion, and all its implications, force us to
seek creative solutions to our transportation needs. The challenge is
to create cities with balanced transportation systems that are both
environmentally and economically sound. LEA has started to help to make
that happen, and another of its continuing priorities of the firm is
its contribution to safe, available and efficient transportation by
railways.
LASA's recent projects in Railways' mark an entry
into a sector that is different from the road planning, engineering
and design, being practiced for last 10 years, in many ways. While both
are land based transportation modes, they differ significantly in terms
of their ownership, nature of operations and structural parameters,
accessibility, geographical reach and spread.
While this entry into a new sector has reinforces
LEA's role in India as Total Transportation Consultants, it has also
provided an edge to its road-based business by harnessing synergies
of operating in both the sector. This is especially true for freight
transportation, as against passenger transportation, where multi-modalism
is the order of the day. LASA is now be able to pass benefits of these
synergies to its clients by advising on their business that cuts across
different modes. One such project involved advising one of its clients
on optimising strategies for port-rail interface. The project envisaged
development of rail connectivity of ports to their hinterlands minimising
transit time and increasing international competitiveness for EXIM cargo
originating/ destined for India.
